Vishalla, Vasna, Ahmedabad

If you want the look and feel of how rural India eats, nothing can beat this.

Vishalla, is a Gujarati folk food destination with an immense attention to intricate details of capturing a village-themed restaurant. Right from the entrance to the dining tables, everything has been done with much detail, so as to give you a feel of Rural India, right in the middle of Modern India. Your eyes will immediately immerse themselves in the dim lighting of the ambiance.

This is a Gujarati restaurant with a touch of Rajasthan in it. Just order your Thali and you will be in for a dive. For the ambiance, there are puppet shows, pottery area, a whole cow shed (fresh milk is used to make the Chaach or Butter Milk and other dairy based items) and a live folk dance area. A small breeze at night will hit you subtly. There is no air-conditioning here and you will have to squat your feet to eat. The food is served on leaves sewn together and the background music of light folk genre will keep you engaged.

The most attractive area was to the left where there is this Utensil Museum, called Vechaar Museum. It has a humongous collection of old and antique utensils, of all shapes and sizes. One of them was a Thousand Year Old. Imagine! From pocket sized utensils to mega sized behemoths, this is indeed one place to enjoy and relish before digging into unlimited food.

The Thali contains approx 35-40 food items. Since this is a Gujarati cuisine restaurant, everything is served sweet. For me, who likes things spicy and hot, it was difficult gulping down this mountain of sweet. But the Bajre ki Roti, Makai ki Roti and Bhakhri (Types of breads in Gujarat, made of Millets, Corn and Wheat respectively) were stupendous. The veggies were sweet too and so was the Kadhi. The salads to go along were the savior for me. I personally loved the Lehsun Chutney (Garlic Chutney), it was spicy and tasted superb. I kept on hogging and I am sure my belly was stretched to its limits.

For washing your hands, water pots are available. There is ash also available which would give you the real feel of the place. People in villages face a lot of water scarcity and as such, use ash or dry sand to wash their hands. It was truly an intriguing thing to watch.

After your dinner is over, you can choose Ice Cream from a lot of flavors available and freshen your palate with a delightful Paan.

This is a Pure Veg Restaurant with a humble village setting. This is by no means a fine dining restaurant but the ambiance would take you to a stroll down the Rural charm of India, the true India. A lot of celebrities have made it here to take that feel. Even our beloved PM Hon. Narendra Modi was here to get a taste of Gujarat.
