Chennai Square, Kaikhali, Kolkata

South Indian food lovers, you have got a twist in the tale.

Chennai Square opened its doors in PS Magnum commercial complex in Kaikhali, VIP Road, Kolkata and fused modern dining with the traditional South Indian cuisines. The decor has been done extremely well, keeping in mind the small space for a restaurant. There are high chairs to accommodate single person seating, as if sitting in a bar. There are only 4 tables that can hold 16-18 people at a go. The tables are cramped. But the lighting has been done in an aesthetic manner. Soothing music is played. The view of the VIP Road is superb.

You will be welcomed with a refreshment drink that is served in a shot glass made of “ice”. Yes, ICE. A super refreshing mango / strawberry drink served in this glass makes it even more enticing.

The menu includes Idlis, Vadas, Dosas, Poha, Uttapams, Upma and rice platters. Keeping the traditional idlis and vadas and dosas intact, they have fused continental serving into these as well. There signature Idli Sizzlers is very unique. Idlis are served on a sizzling plate. The taste and flavor was immaculate. Very crispy Idlis.

There Cheese Vadas are also lip-smacking. If you want a good cheese pull, then be here to have some fun. The crisp vadas, coupled with cheese, is superb to have.

There range of Dosas also covers a good variety. The signature dosa is the Malgupudi Special Dosa, which is an extremely crispy dosa. They serve Sambhar, Garlic Chutney and Coconut Chutney in small cute cups. So is the Aloo Masala. Another highlight item was the Cheese Burst Dosa. It was basically 4 towers of dosas, drizzled with cheese. As the pictures suggest, there is like a ton of cheese in the dosas, but in reality the quantity of cheese is fairly low. Although, it tasted good.

I would also like to point out their mocktails and refreshing drinks. The Litchi Blossom was very good. I also tried the Chilli Pataka. It was worth the money. A definite try for those who love things spicy.

To conclude, if you are looking for a good family joint that serves vegan meal, then this is the place for you. A casual outing for those who love everything South Indian.
